Kennedy mum on new version of ENDA;
Trans-inclusive rights bill faces unclear future in new new Congress

With the Democrats in control of Congress for the first time in 12 years, gay, [lesbian, bisexual and transgender] rights advocates are optimistic about a vote in the House and Senate later this year on the long-stalled Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the Washington-based National Center for Transgender Equality, said she is optimistic that Kennedy would eventually support a trans-inclusive ENDA, but she acknowledged that he has yet to disclose his position on the issue.

“The answer is we don’t know,” Keisling said. “But I’m not feeling a minute-by-minute crisis on this. Senator Kennedy is one of the nation’s leading figures on civil rights. I am very optimistic that he is going to come out strong on this.”
