Introducing our new Health Coverage Guide!

Those outside the community might not know it, but a startling fact hangs over transgender people whenever we seek medically necessary care. According to our U.S. Transgender Survey, one in four transgender people with insurance coverage reported experiencing mistreatment or unfair denials in the year prior to taking the survey. We’re on the front lines of changing this.

That’s why today, we’ve launched our new Health Coverage Guide! The Health Coverage Guide is an interactive tool for transgender people, their families, and their caregivers working to understand their health insurance. The Guide offers step-by-step instructions to help you learn what your plan covers and help get approval for transition-related care, no matter what part of the country you live in, whether you get insurance through your employer, the individual market, or are on Medicaid!

Do you need to learn more about what plans offer coverage for transition-related care? Are there questions that you have about the process to obtain a pre-authorization, as many of the services we need require? The Health Coverage Guide’s interactive walkthroughs can help you navigate health insurance plans with confidence. We also provide sample letters for things like pre-authorizations.

The Trump administration’s latest attacks prove we’ve got a long fight ahead of us to protect our right to access healthcare. This long-awaited resource is just one step forward, but it’s an important one, and one that we’re tremendously proud of offering here at NCTE.
