The National Center for Transgender Equality joins the countless voices condemning the appointment of Steve Bannon as Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor to President-elect Donald Trump.

The appointment of a hate-peddling, fear-mongering extremist like Bannon in a top White House post should shock and disgust all of us, no matter who we are or how we voted. President-elect Trump may have talked last week about “binding up the wounds of division,” but he has put in leadership a figure who has made his name demeaning and dehumanizing people of color, immigrants, women, religious minorities, and LGBT people, and providing a welcoming forum for the most overtly racist white-supremacists. It is no wonder that the KKK and other white-supremacist groups celebrated Bannon’s appointment.

Bannon has personally trafficked in misogyny and anti-LGBT slurs throughout his years building a media hub for white nationalists and other so-called “alt-right” extremists. His site, Breitbart News, has relentlessly defamed transgender people along with women, immigrants, and virtually every minority group in American society. Anti-transgender slurs have been a signature of Breitbart, and the site has countless times mocked transgender people in general and individual transgender youth and adults name as “emotionally disturbed and confused,” “deluded,” “mutilated,” and “sick.”

This is not politics as usual—it is far worse and more disturbing. NCTE will continue to advocate at all levels of government and to oppose any attack on any community in our nation.
