NCTE Opposes Anti-LGBT Extremist Price for HHS Secretary

NCTE strongly opposes the nomination of Rep. Tom Price for HHS Secretary based on his long history of extreme anti-LGBT views and his repeated efforts to strip health insurance from millions of people and eliminate consumer protections in health care. The policies Price has consistently favored, as well as his views on LGBT people's lives and families, could have devastating impacts on LGBT people's health and economic security.

Price is a hardline opponent of the Affordable Care Act and authored a dangerous “replacement” plan that would permit denying insurance to people with pre-existing conditions, gut other consumer protections, entirely eliminate the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, and leave millions of currently insured people without coverage. Price’s plan would be devastating for LGBT families and individuals, especially middle class and low-income people. Price has also pushed plans to weaken and dismantle the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Price has been a staunch advocate of defunding Planned Parenthood, which provides critical cancer and STD screenings and other preventive care for millions of people across the country and is a critical source of health care for transgender people.

Price also has a long history as an anti-LGBT extremist. He said in 2013 that LGBT people’s “lifestyles” are driving up health care costs and that LGBT equality might have caused Hurricane Sandy. He has repeatedly opposed any form of protection from discrimination for LGBT people, and pressed for enshrining discrimination against LGBT families in a constitutional amendment. He has mocked transgender people and called support for transgender students “absurd.”

NCTE calls on the Unites States Senate to reject this dangerous nomination.
