The Trans Military Ban is Already Causing Harm — But There’s a Way to Stop It
On September 14, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis issued interim guidance on President Donald Trump’s transgender troop ban, causing concern among military service members. Contrary to numerous press reports, the Pentagon guidance did not place the President’s transgender ban “on hold.” Instead, it simply reiterated the President Trump’s timeline for a ban on and eventual purge of transgender troops.
Under this timeline, no transgender service member is safe from discharge once the Department of Defense has developed an “implementation plan,” to be completed by February of 2018. Critically, the panel charged with developing that plan has been directed to consider only how to ban and purge transgender troops — not whether to do so.
