WIN: Puerto Rico Orders Driver's License Modernization

Image

Today, Puerto Rico Governor, Hon. Alejandro J. García Padilla, issued an Executive Order calling on the Secretary of Transportation and Public Works to implement an official gender marker change policy for driver’s licenses and state IDs issued by Puerto Rico. Under this order, the Department of Transportation and Public Works has three months to develop a gender marker change policy so that transgender individuals living in Puerto Rico can obtain identification that matches who they are.

The Order points out that all 50 states have procedures for updating the gender markers on state IDs, and cites numerous federal policies that have removed surgical requirements and otherwise implemented accessible procedures for updating gender markers on various documents.
