These Are the 2017 Victims of Anti-Transgender Homicides

By NCTE’s count, at least 28 people have been died in 2017 after being attacked for being transgender or being perceived as transgender, up from the 25 such victims we identified in 2016. Of these murders, victims have overwhelmingly been Black transgender women and other transgender women of color, pointing to the compounding effects that factors like race have on discrimination and violence against transgender people.
It is very likely that the victims we have identified are not the only people who have been murdered for being transgender this year. It is also vital to remember that these homicides are just the tip of the iceberg. Underlying these murders is a much larger pattern of attitudes that cause overlapping violence against transgender people, violence against women, and violence against people of color.
Despite increased media attention on transgender people, rising public awareness, and the work of advocates all over the nation, this violence shows little sign of abating.
Today, NCTE remembers the 29 people who have been victims of fatal anti-transgender violence since last year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance.
