White House bans “transgender” “fetus” “evidence-based” as words at CDC

Washington, DC—The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) is outraged at the news that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has banned the word “transgender” from official documents. Other words banned for political reasons include “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.” We will fight this irresponsible politicization of the CDC and our public health systems.

NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling offers the following statement:

“If this news report is accurate—and of course it is— this would be an unprecedented attack on transgender people, science, and public health itself. To pretend and insist that transgender people do not exist, and to allow this lie to infect public health research and prevention is irrational and very dangerous, and not just to transgender people. That they have banned the phrases “evidence-based” and “science-based” tells us all we need to know: The Trump Administration is full of dangerous science deniers who have no business near American public health systems like the CDC. They are actually going to kill Americans if they do not stop.”

The CDC is charged with preventing and treating the HIV epidemic and this recklessness could put transgender people and all Americans at risk. NCTE will fight this irresponsible politicization of the CDC and our public health systems.
