Transgender advocates call on Congress to pass a clean Dream Act
Washington, DC — Following yesterday’s meeting at the White House, both chambers of Congress voted to approve a short-term spending bill that temporarily funds the government and effectively delays a vote on the Dream Act. In response to these developments, NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling issued the following statement:
“Members of Congress have two weeks to decide whether to support a pathway to citizenship for two million Dreamers, or to pass a spending bill funding their deportation. DACA protections have already expired for over 11,000 Dreamers since its repeal. We cannot afford to wait until March for a solution. It is irresponsible and heartless for Congress to force Dreamers to live under constant fear for themselves and the futures of their families, especially when the very lives and safety of tens of thousands of LGBTQ Dreamers are under threat upon deportation. With increasing bipartisan support on Capitol Hill, and an overwhelming outcry of community voices across the country, the choice is clear. Congress must pass a clean Dream Act by December 22.”
