WASHINGTON, DC – The National Center for Transgender Equality today released the following statement regarding the US Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey and ends the constitutional protect for abortion.

The vote to overturn nearly 50 years of precedent and allow states to ban abortion was 6-3.

The statement should be attributed to Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality.

“The Supreme Court’s decision today in Dobbs, overturning Roe v. Wade, is appalling. Abortion and reproductive health care are essential and even lifesaving health care for everyone, especially for trans people. This decision violates the fundamental rights of people across the country by making it extremely difficult – or impossible – for us to receive the health care we need. With the decision to support abortion now left up to the states, 26 states are poised to lose abortion access, and many other states could severely restrict access.

“All people must be able to access abortions and make their own decisions about their bodies. These coordinated attacks on health care, whether targeting abortion or gender-affirming care, are politically motivated efforts to strip all of us of our bodily autonomy.

“As we navigate the consequences of this horrific decision, we will always support both abortion providers and abortion patients. Access to abortion is a fundamental right.”
