Today President Trump signed executive orders discriminating against Muslims, refugees, and other immigrants seeking safety in the United States.  Today’s actions follow orders on Wednesday directing a massive expansion of deportations and detentions, a costly and deadly border wall, and devastating financial retaliation against dozens of cities that protect vulnerable immigrants.

“This is bigotry, pure and simple,” said NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling. “These despicable orders are about persecution, not protection. They will cost lives. In this country, we do not ban people because of their religion. We do not abandon people to die. We do not turn away those yearning to breathe free. No group of people in this country is safe when this kind of discrimination comes from our highest office.”

NCTE calls on Congress to immediately pass legislation to prohibit the federal government from banning, registering, or otherwise discriminating against individuals because of their race, nationality, or religion, and to protect refugees fleeing war and other deadly threats.
