The House of Representatives today narrowly advanced a bill to repeal core parts of the Affordable Care Act. National Center for Transgender Equality Executive Director Mara Keisling offers the following statement:

Today’s vote was momentous for its lack of any reason or fact-based decision-making, which defies virtually every professional medical and health organization. This dangerous bill is even worse than the one that flopped in March, and continues to fail dismally at its one purpose: protecting the health of over 300 million Americans.

By gutting pre-existing condition protections, Medicaid, and funding for Planned Parenthood, it is especially harmful for transgender Americans and their families who already face serious barriers to health care. The overwhelming outcry from LGBT Americans and so many others across the country needs to continue as the fight moves to the Senate.

We will continue to fight any effort by Congressional leaders or President Trump to take health care away from Americans. Just this week, the Administration announced plans to promote discrimination by rolling back implementation of the ACA’s nondiscrimination protections. The administration cannot change the law on its own, and we will resist going backward at every turn.
