Who should apply to work at A4TE?

  • We are committed to creating a diverse and intersectional team made up of people who are kind, optimistic, talented and committed to social justice.
  • You don’t need to have experience as a “trans activist.” While being an “activist” of any kind is great and relevant, so is working or volunteering to serve the trans community, or other communities, in many other ways, whether that is through a service group, a community group, or in another kind of way. People coming from the for-profit world are also welcome. Just be sure to tell us how your life experience translates to what we need in the position we are hiring for.
  • Most roles at A4TE are remote, though some may have regional requirements. Because of this, our applicant pool consists of people from across the country. A4TE can assist with relocation expenses for candidates who are offered the position, if the position’s location requires it. Please don’t let the cost of moving stop you from applying.

Diversity and Racial Justice

Advocates for Trans Equality affirmatively values diversity and seeks to hire and retain staff that reflects the diversity of our communities.

At A4TE, we strive to create an environment where all employees know they are valued. In particular, we work to address anti-Black racism as it greatly impacts our organization and our community. We work to address racism whether it is coming from the inside or from outside and whether it is manifesting on personal or systemic levels. We continuously challenge ourselves to understand and address inequities and are committed to the learning process, both personal and professional. As a social justice organization, we will only succeed in creating a just and equitable society for all trans people if we focus our work on the needs of the most marginalized trans people, especially trans people of color. We are deeply committed to transformation and invite our community to hold us accountable in this crucial work.

What should I expect during the hiring process?

  • After reviewing applications, those who advance will be invited to do a short, 30-minute phone interview. Those who go to the next round can expect a video interview.
  • Our hiring philosophy strongly centers accessibility. For this reason, we provide all candidates with a copy of the questions they will be asked in advance of all interviews.
  • After receiving an offer, all candidates have the option for a culture-focused meet and greet with members of the broader organization. This meet and greet is designed for candidates to get to know A4TE, and is not scored by the hiring team.
  • A4TE strives for the hiring process to be complete within 8 weeks of the initial posting of an open position. Because people apply from all over the country, sometimes 8 weeks is not achievable, especially if there is a need for travel. Our commitment to you is to keep you informed of our process and timeline every step of the way.
  • A4TE provides reasonable accommodations for the application, interview, or any other aspects of the employee selection process to applicants with disabilities. Please contact us via [email protected] so your request can be handled appropriately and confidentially.

Internships and Fellowships

Post-graduate legal internships, fellowships and other internships are often set up months or even over a year in advance. If you are interested in becoming a post-graduate fellow, graduate or undergraduate intern, or non-academic intern, you will be able to apply here through our applicant portal once these positions become available. You will be able to include your resume, cover letter and other information about why you want to intern with us. A4TE has hosted numerous post-graduate fellows who have brought their own funding from their law school or other granting organization. Our internship program is growing, as part of our commitment to increase work opportunities for those most impacted by inequities.
