Last week, NCTE joined the National Center for Lesbian RightsLambda Legal, the National Trans Bar Association, and other advocacy organizations in filing a “friend of the court” brief in support of Shiloh Quine and other trans prisoners in Quine v. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

This case has already brought about a landmark settlement that included an end to California’s blanket ban on transition-related surgical treatment for transgender prisoners. The current appeal concerns access to commissary items consistent with a prisoner’s gender identity.

Now, we are asking a federal appeals court to take a closer look at the discriminatory treatment of trans people in prisons. The brief calls for the court to apply heightened scrutiny when examining discrimination against transgender people.
