Thanks for your application.

Thank you for completing A4TE’s Name Change Project Intake Form. You must review this confirmation page for next steps. Note that completion of the intake process does not guarantee representation.

Next Steps

A4TE tries to respond to all legal assistance requests on a first come, first serve basis.

A4TE determines whether you meet criteria for assistance.

We cannot help everyone who contacts us. Once we have evaluated your initial intake form, there are four possible responses:

  • Decline
Unfortunately, we are unable to help everyone who asks for our help. If we determine that you are not eligible, we will let you know via email, and we will send you self-help resources whenever possible.
  • Information Request
If information is missing from an intake form or we require additional information to determine eligibility, a staffer will reach out to you via email to gather more information so that we can determine eligibility.
  • Scheduling Intake
Some eligible applicants must complete a phone intake to gather additional information. These phone intakes take 20-30 minutes and are conducted by A4TE staffers, and are confidential.
  • Immediate Assignment
Some cases are ready to be assigned directly to an attorney without any additional information requests or without an intake call.

*Please note if you are able to be assigned directly to an attorney, you will receive an email to electronically sign our Participant Agreement, which states that A4TE is not your lawyer, but we will refer you to a lawyer who will represent you. You can e-sign the document with your chosen name. By signing this, you are agreeing to be an active participant in the process and respond to both A4TE and your attorney, as failure to keep in contact will result in us having to close your case. YOUR CASE CANNOT BE ASSIGNED UNTIL THE PARTICIPANT AGREEMENT IS SIGNED. If you are unable to digitally sign the Participant Agreement, please email [email protected].

Timeline

New Application Eligibility Waitlist
Waitlist timelines differ for each of our service areas. Typically, once an application is submitted, it will be reviewed by the Name Change Project Team within 2 weeks. We will follow up via email to discuss the next steps or to decline the application. If an application is denied, we will provide self-help resources for your service area.

Attorney Assignment Waitlist
If an applicant is deemed eligible for representation, the applicant will be placed on a waitlist for referral to an attorney for name change representation. Assignment time for an attorney typically takes around 3-4 weeks. Once assigned, you will receive an email with the name of the firm working on your case and a timeline for when you should hear from your attorney directly.
