A4TE Issues Statement on Trump Administration’s Harmful Transgender Military Order

[Washington, D.C.] – Last night, the Trump Administration issued an executive order directly targeting transgender servicemembers in the military. Olivia Hunt, Director of Federal Policy at A4TE, issued the following statement: 
 
“The Trump administration’s unconscionable attack on trans servicemembers is an insult to the dignity, honor, and integrity of thousands of patriotic Americans who have committed to serving this country simply because of who they are. The new policies it directs the Department of Defense to adopt are discriminatory, undermine core military values, and disrespect the sacrifices made by trans servicemembers and their families. 

“Trans people have always been a part of the military, serving honorably and meeting the same rigorous standards as their peers. For nearly a decade, trans servicemembers have been able to serve in the military openly and authentically as themselves. This order betrays the trust of the thousands of trans people who have come out and transitioned while serving, with the full support of their unit members and chain of command. It also jeopardizes their access to critical benefits such as healthcare, education, and retirement, essential for their well-being and stability.  
 
“Pushing trans people out of military service weakens military readiness by creating gaps in vital roles and increasing the strain on all service members. It contradicts the military’s mission to protect all Americans by excluding capable and qualified individuals based solely on their identity. What matters in the military is the ability to do the job - not who you are. 

“The military’s strength lies in its diversity and shared mission. Trans servicemembers have more than proven their ability to serve with honor. Denying them the opportunity to do so not only diminishes our military but also puts our nation at greater risk. This is an alarming time for trans servicemembers, who are left questioning their careers and futures under this discriminatory order. To every trans servicemember, we want you to know: we have your backs. We will not stand by while discrimination undermines the integrity of our armed forces.”
