NCTE Statement on the Dismissal of Jeff Sessions

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions—who imprisoned migrant children, attempted to destabilize and destroy the Affordable Care Act, halted federal investigations into acts of abuse by police officers, defended bans on Muslims, refugees, and transgender troops, and attempted to erase the right of transgender people to health care, education, and equal employment—was effectively fired from his post earlier this afternoon.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, responded to Sessions resignation:

"Jeff Sessions was a terrible Attorney General who lawlessly refused to enforce federal civil rights laws, attacking almost all marginalized people. However, his dismissal by President Trump to extert unjust control over the Department of Justice over his own likely wrongdoing should make every American worry about the President’s increased lawlessness."
