[Washington, DC] - The presidential race remains too close to call, with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump locked in a tight contest. With votes still being counted in several key states, it could be weeks before a clear winner is determined.

“This extended counting process is slow, but it’s crucial that every vote is honored. We are prepared to keep pushing forward to protect our democracy. The fight for an inclusive, hopeful future remains strong, no matter how long it takes to count every vote. No matter who is in office, A4TE is prepared for this challenge,” said Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Advocates for Trans Equality Executive Director.

“While we await the final results, Harris and Walz have shown that equality matters. Running on the most pro-equality platform in history, they have maintained a strong commitment to transgender rights and broader social justice. From her tenure as district attorney of California to serving as the first woman of color Vice President, Harris has championed the trans community, while Walz has made Minnesota a sanctuary for trans people and our families. Their vision is one where trans people can live free from discrimination, walk the streets without fear, and where trans children are loved, embraced, and protected from harm.”

Despite uncertainty, tonight marks a historic moment for the trans community as Senator Sarah McBride becomes the first openly trans congresswoman. “Senator McBride’s election stands as a powerful testament to the resilience, strength, and courage of the trans community," said Josie Caballero, Director of Voting and Elections at A4TE. “Let this victory serve as a reminder that, despite facing relentless adversity and attacks, the trans community is living fulfilling lives and shaping the future of our nation.

Advocates for Trans Equality endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket in Fall 2023 and then endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in August when the President withdrew. In an historic first, A4TE hosted the Trans Folks for Harris Call and gathered about 1,000 trans people on a Zoom call to support the Harris campaign. Additionally, A4TE actively supported the Harris campaign by organizing a town hall, hosting a virtual rally, and spreading crucial campaign updates to engage and mobilize voters.
