U.S. Trans Survey

The US Trans Survey, or USTS, provides much-needed information to help the public understand the lives and experiences of transgender people in the United States and the disparities that many transgender people face.

The USTS fills in some of the large gaps in research about transgender people, and it provides critical tools for researchers, policymakers, and advocates seeking to better understand the needs of transgender people and to find ways to improve their lives.

The 2022 U.S. Trans Survey was fielded from October 19 to December 5, 2022, and the Early Insights Report - which contains the first data from the survey - is now available. As a community-based survey, the USTS was developed with the assistance of dozens of individuals and organizations with robust connections to trans people and communities throughout the United States and with subject-matter expertise.

The 2022 survey had 92,329 respondents, making it the largest survey ever devoted to the lives and experiences of trans people.

The 2015 survey had 27,715 respondents across the United States. The 2015 USTS was also a follow up to the 2008-09 National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS), which though ground-breaking at the time as the largest survey of trans people, had a much smaller sample of 6,452.
